राज कपूर 14 दिसंबर 1924 को एक शहर पेशावर (अब पाकिस्तान में) में पैदा हुआ थे. उनके पिता पृथ्वीराज कपूर एवं माता का नाम रामसरानी देवी कपूर था. उनके बचपन का नाम राज नहीं बल्कि रणबीर था इसी नाम से उनके पोते का नाम रखा गया.

राज कपूर ने एक clap Boy और केदार शर्मा के असिस्टेंट के रूप में अपना कैरियर शुरू किया। सन् 1935 में, ग्यारह वर्ष की आयु में राज कपूर अपनी पहली फिल्म इंकलाब में काम किया था.
राज कपूर को बड़ा ब्रेक 1947 में मिला जब उन्होंने केदार शर्मा द्वारा निर्देशित फिल्म नील कमल, में अग्रणी भूमिका निभाई।
